Immune system Flashcards
Immunology definition
mechanism used to defend body from inavsion of pathogens
Immunogen
molecule that stimulates system to produce a response
Antigen
part of immunogen that reacts with effector cells
Epitope
part of antigen that reacts
Types of myeloid cells
- granulocytes
- antigen presenting cells
- mast cells
what happens in primary lymphoid tissues? (examples)
- lymphocytes produced and mature
- no responses
Eg. bone marrow and thymus
what happens to B and T Cells in the bone marrow?
B cells = originate and mature
T cells = originate, leave immature
What happens to T cells in the thymus?
- complete maturation
- move from cortex to medulla as they differentiate
examples of Secondary lymphoid tissues/ what happens there?
- where mature lymphocytes are activated
Eg. - lymphatic vessels
- lymph nodes
what do lymphatic vessels do?
collect plasma fluid
What is MALT?
mucosa associated lymphoid tissue
- specialised tissue in submucosal layers
The 2 types of immunity?
Innate immunity - rapid
Adaptive immunity - slow
the 3 Immediate innate responses?
- physical and chemical barriers
- anti-microbial proteins
- complement system
Induced innate response
- Phagocytosis (bacteria)
- cytokines production/ inflammation
- toll like receptors
- interferon , natural killer cells (virus)
Structure of antibodies?
- 4 polypeptide chains ( 2 heavy 2 light)
- y shape
- variable and constant regions
