immune defenses Flashcards
what is innate (native) immunity
restricts entry or immediately responds to a foreign
organism (antigen) through the activation of phagocytic cells,
complement, and inflammation
occurs with all microorganisms regardless of previous exposure
what is passive immunity
antibodies produced by an external source
ex: Administration of antibodies during active infection such as Rabies antiserum
what is included in innate immunity
Intact skin, the body’s first line of defense
●● Mucous membranes, secretions, enzymes, phagocytic cells, and
protective proteins
●● Inflammatory response with phagocytic cells, the complement system,
and interferons localize the invasion and prevent its spread
what is specific adaptive immunity
allows the body to make antibodies in
response to a foreign organism (antigen).
what does specific adaptive immunity directs against
identifiable micro‑organism
what is active immunity
Antibodies are produced in response to an antigen
what is an example of active immunity
infection with disease or vaccination
what does active immunity require
Requires time to react to antigens
what type of immunity does active immunity provide
permanent immunity
what does active immunity involve
B and T lymphocytes
activity immunity produces specific antibodies against what antigens
immunoglobulins [IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, IgM])
