Mutiny on the Potemkin
- Russia battleship
- the crew protested against eating rotten meat
- opposed and rebelled against officers
- captain ordered firing squad to kill them but they refused and joined the crew
- Arrived at Odessa port - anti Gov strike being greeted by striking workers
Tsar - big threat.
- was in vulnerable position as own crew/soldiers going against him
- shows he can’t control parts of army and doesn’t have their loyalty which means can’t use them to control other rebellions
- ends quickly by soldiers dispersing them - no spread
October manifesto
- Tsar try’s to divide opposition that opposed his Gov
- with witte drafted concessions to APPEASE LIBERALS

~right of political parties to exist
~ trade unions
Liberals get appeased (MC) and get what they want so stop protesting. Very sig but temporary so he can remove them from chaos
APPEASEMENT

- Asserted Tsars power over the duma - right to rule independently of the duma when it’s not in session
- assertion of his autocratic ness and supreme leader attitude.

Formation of soviets
- representing industrial workers
- created at st Petersburg and Moscow to improve working conditions and to get them a political voice
- Trotsky the chairman
Tsar is alarmed as they are concentrated and since they were revolutionary they were a big threat.
Also set up alternative GOV
Siege of the St Petersburg soviet HQ
- siege goes on for 5 days during Nov
- Tsars troops surround it and 2600 arrested including Trotsky
They set up an alternative Gov BUT was able to crush this and used troops from RJ war even-though it’s failure we’re still loyal to tsar so he had control
Uprising in Moscow
- in early Dec 1905
- Bolsheviks, SR, Mensheviks launched general strike blockading streets etc
Tsar sent troops / thousands die and on 18th Dec soviets surrender and army destroy their buildings
Tsar still had control.
Stolypin neckties and cars
- introduces martial law suspending normal law - able to have fast trials meaning more executions.
- 1906 - 3000 revolutionaries hanged and over 4000 sent to manual labour
- was done to remove revolutionary threat and hanging was a successful permanent removal.
