Reds strengths
A
- Lenin was authoritarian leader and Trotsky head of Red army
- controlled central Russia , railways etc
- were united and shared a common goal to preserve communism
- Trotsky led red army and militia, he was intelligent and had tactics. Led them with an iron fist - brutality - reinstating strict discipline on red army (death for desertion)
- He attached a Political Commissar to every regiment (Bolsh) who observed and reported on any disloyalty.
- controlled the railway - so able to easily deploy troops to where they are needed, communication, ensure supplies, Trotsky special train - most experienced and skilled soldiers + printing press - produce and distribute propaganda posters
- skilled speaker, passionate.
- Tobacco - given to soldiers as a treat
so that he keeps control of the industrial cities - attacking the fact that the Whites are using support from the Allies - patriotic!

A
- tsarists, kadets , SRs
- were too spread out geographically so was difficult to communicate/ redeploy troops where intense fighting was as well as supplies
- Disunited and didn’t share a common goal so had ineffective cooperation
- Generals gained position from high status/ inflexible to work together
- The fact that they were relying on support from the Allies made them appear weak.
- extreme brutality to keep control of their soldiers
