What are the major advantages of MRI?
No radiation
Precise ST detail
When would you use a T1 MRI?
Looking at anatomical detail, fat containing structures, and subacute hemorrhages
When would you use a T2 MRI?
Looking at pathological structures (edema, tumor, infarct)
How does the appearance of water differ in T1 vs T2 weighted MRI’s?
T1 –> dark
T2 –> white
Which organs are most sensitive to radiation?
Lymphoid, bone marrow, testes/ovaries, SI (rapidly dividing cells)
What contrasts are used for GI imaging?
Barium, Gastrograffin
What IV contrast is used?
Iodine-based
What contrast is used for MRI?
Gadolinium
What consideration needs to be accounted for in pts taking Metformin?
Adding contrast can lead to lactic acidosis
If Gadolinium is used during an MRI, which weight are the images taken in, T1 or T2?
T1
