Imaging - Goldschmidt Flashcards
Inventor of x-rays?
Roentgen
by what mechanism to x-rays harm people?
Displaced electrons can harm tissue as can resultant free radicals!
Radiation is measure by what unit?
sieverts (spelling?)
Abdomen CT is the best screening tool for all abdominal problems except for:
gall bladder disease and abdominal pain in young women
but great for tumors, UTI, kidney stones etc.
What is contrast used for in CT studies?
opacify bowels when taken orally
Opacify vessels when taken by IV
Drawback to contrast?
Many experience allergic reactions, mild like hives or can be severe
In extreme cases can cause nephropathy
What is the comparison of ionizing radiation between CT scans and MRI ?
MRI has no ionizing radiation
Disadvantages to MRI?
expensive!
Claustrophobic
metal makes artifacts
What is nuclear medicine?
Radio tracers are injected into the body and then visualized
Have less anatomical info, but good to test function of Gall Bladder or do bone scans
What is a Barium Examination
Contrast placed in GI tract (oral or douche)
Way old fashioned, colonoscopy is just way better, even CT has replaced some things
What is PET good for?
uses fluorine-labeled glucose to visualize abnormal metabolic activity in organs that might appear normal
You can also see tumors because they are fast-dividing and use lots of glucose
Which test can be combined with PET for better visualization?
CT/PET allows you to see a lot of anatomy combined with sugar emtabolism info
