a mental picture. Does not always have to be visual
How are mental images created?
dual-coding theory which breaks down mental representation of events in two categories
- verbal system: deals with words and their components
- Non-verbal system: deals with images and their components
How can the verbal and non-verbal systems interact?
through referential connections
Why can concrete words be recalled better?
because they can be represented using the verbal and non-verbal systems.
What is the propositional representation hypothesis?
all info is stored as descriptive statements, regardless of the content
What can enhance vividness of mental imagery?
familiarity
What is a mental rotation?
manipulating a mental image in space
What does the speed of mental rotation depend on?
how far the object needs to be rotated
What does speed of mental scanning depend on?
further the scanning, the longer the reaction time
What is an egocentric transformation?
moving oneself in space to view different objets
What is Amusia?
deficit in musical abilities
