Auditory perception Flashcards
what is perception?
dynamic and integrated process that combines info from sense organs with memories of past experiences, expectations of likely future actions, attention, motivation, and context
what is sound?
change in air pressure and sound waves
what is frequency?
speed of which the sound waves move
what is amplitude?
how high and low the sound waves go
How many hair cells are in the ear?
1500
What happens when the hair cells move?
they release neurotransmitters that stimulate the auditory nerve, produces action potential, then sequence of events that leads to the info going to the auditory cortex.
where do high frequencies resonate?
towards the base of the basilar membrane
where do low frequencies resonate?
towards the apex of the basilar membrane.
Where are high frequencies processed in auditory cortex?
base of cochlea
where are low frequencies processed in auditory cortex?
apex of cochlea
What are tones?
simplified version of a sound
What is our perception of loudness?
how we perceive the interaction between amplitude and frequency.
What is an auditory scene analysis?
The process by which we form mental representations of sound into auditory streams.
What is an auditory stream?
independent unit of sound to which we assign meaning
what is a spectogram?
visual representation of the spectral organization of sound
