δέξατό οἱ σκῆπτρον πατρώϊον ἄφθιτον αἰεί:

νῦν μὲν πειρᾶται, τάχα δ᾽ ἴψεται υἷας Ἀχαιῶν.
ἐν βουλῇ δ᾽ οὐ πάντες ἀκούσαμεν οἷον ἔειπε.
μή τι χολωσάμενος ῥέξῃ κακὸν υἷας Ἀχαιῶν:
θυμὸς δὲ μέγας ἐστὶ διοτρεφέων βασιλήων,
τιμὴ δ᾽ ἐκ Διός ἐστι, φιλεῖ δέ ἑ μητίετα Ζεύς.
ὃν δ᾽ αὖ δήμου τ᾽ ἄνδρα ἴδοι βοόωντά τ᾽ ἐφεύροι,
τὸν σκήπτρῳ ἐλάσασκεν ὁμοκλήσασκέ τε μύθῳ:
δαιμόνι᾽ ἀτρέμας ἧσο καὶ ἄλλων μῦθον ἄκουε,
οἳ σέο φέρτεροί εἰσι, σὺ δ᾽ ἀπτόλεμος καὶ ἄναλκις
οὔτέ ποτ᾽ ἐν πολέμῳ ἐναρίθμιος οὔτ᾽ ἐνὶ βουλῇ:
οὐ μέν πως πάντες βασιλεύσομεν ἐνθάδ᾽ Ἀχαιοί:
οὐκ ἀγαθὸν πολυκοιρανίη: εἷς κοίρανος ἔστω,
εἷς βασιλεύς, ᾧ δῶκε Κρόνου πάϊς ἀγκυλομήτεω
σκῆπτρόν τ᾽ ἠδὲ θέμιστας, ἵνά σφισι βουλεύῃσι.

He himself went straight against Agamemnon, son of Atreus, he received the always unbreakable staff of his ancestors, with its help he went down the bronze clad ships of the Archaeans.
whoever he met with, a king and honourable man, coming beside them he restrained them with gentle words.
‘good man, it does not seem good for you as if you were afraid, but you yourself sit and settle your men. For you do not yet clearly know the mind of Atrides. He is trying now but soon will crush the sons of the Archaeans. In council, not everyone heard the things he said. (beware) lest
being angry, he works something bad against the sons of the Archaeans.
Great is the heart of cherished kings, honour comes from Zeus and, all wise Zeus, loves them.
But whatever man of the people he saw and found shouting, he drove on with his staff and threaten them with words. Good man, sit motionless and and listen to the words of others, who are better than you, being unwarlike and without strength, not ever counted in war nor in council. not in anyway will all Archaeans rule here. The rule of many is not good, let there be one ruler, one king, to whom the child of crooked Kronos gave the staff and laws so that he can give council to his people.

κυρτὼ ἐπὶ στῆθος συνοχωκότε: αὐτὰρ ὕπερθε

ἔχθιστος δ᾽ Ἀχιλῆϊ μάλιστ᾽ ἦν ἠδ᾽ Ὀδυσῆϊ:
τὼ γὰρ νεικείεσκε: τότ᾽ αὖτ᾽ Ἀγαμέμνονι δίῳ
ὀξέα κεκλήγων λέγ᾽ ὀνείδεα: τῷ δ᾽ ἄρ᾽ Ἀχαιοὶ
ἐκπάγλως κοτέοντο νεμέσσηθέν τ᾽ ἐνὶ θυμῷ.

In this way, he managed the army as king, and they hurried again to the assembly from the ships and huts with noisily, just as when the wave of the violent sea roars on the long beach, and the ocean crashes. The others sat and were restrained on their seats, yet Thersites the blabber mouth alone kept talking, the words in his mind disorderly and many in vain, nevertheless not from order, he challenged kings, but whatever seemed to be funny to the Argives. The most shameful man came from Ilios, he was bandy-legged and lame in one foot. His bent shoulders were curved towards his chest. Nevertheless above them his head was pointed, and his hair grew thin. He was especially most hated by Achilles and Odysseus, for he quarrelled with them, but now, shrieking with shrill cries, he spoke blame against noble Agamemnon. The Archaeans, feeling shame in their hearts, were angry with him.

Nevertheless shouting loudly he railed at Agamemnon, ‘Son of Atreus, of what things are you complaining or in need of? You hut is filled with bronze, there are many choice women in you hut, who we Archaeans gave to you first of all whenever we raid a citadel. Or do you still lack gold which one of the horse taming Trojans will bring out of Troy as ransom for his son, who perhaps having bound I brought or another Archaean, or a young woman, so you can mix with her in love, whom you will keep far apart for yourself? it does not seem (right) being the leader to lead the sons of the Achaeans into harm. Oh dear ones, bad blameworthy women of Achaea, no longer (male) Archaeans, let us return homewards on our ships, let us leave him here in Troy to digest his so that he may see whether we are of aid to him in someway or not. he who now dishonours Achilles, a better man than him. For he has seized the prize and has it, taken away from him. But there is not great rage in Achilles’ heart, instead he is careless. Otherwise you would now be making your last outrageous act.’

So spoke Thersites, railing against Agamemnon the shepard of men. Swiftly noble Odysseus came to his side and looking at him with an angry glance scolded him with words. ‘Thersites, of reckless speech, shrill speaker, shut up and do not wish to quarrel alone with the king. For I do not say that there is another lesser mortal than you, as many as who came from Ilios with Atrides. Therefore, do not have the king’s name in your mouth as you speak, and cast reproaches on them, and keep watch for returning home. We do not clearly know how the work will be or whether we sons of Achaeans will return home well or badly.

you sit idle, making reproaches against Agamemnon son of Atreus, the shepherd of men because the heroes of Danaans gave him very many things, while you harangue him tauntingly.
But I will speak out to you, and this will be brought to finition. if still meet with you playing the fool, you as are in this way now, then no longer will the head remain on Ody’s shoulders, nor still be called the father of Telemachus, if having seized you I do not strip off your fine clothes, and cloak and tunic, that covers up your shame, and I will send you wailing to the swift ships away from the assembly struck with shameful blows.

ἐνθάδ᾽ ἔτι στείχοντες ἀπ᾽ Ἄργεος ἱπποβότοιο
Ἴλιον ἐκπέρσαντ᾽ εὐτείχεον ἀπονέεσθαι.

So he spoke, and struck his back and shoulders with his staff, and Thersites doubled over, a big tear falling from him, and a red welt swelled up on his back from the golden staff.
he sat down and was afraid, in pain and with a foolish look he wiped away his tears.
But they, although grieving, all laughed merrily at him, and so someone looking to his neighbour would say ‘truly Ody has done countless good things as leader in good council and marshalling war. Now this is the best he has performed among the Archaeans, he has stopped the loud mouthed babbler from the assembly. Surely not again will his proud spirit urge him to quarrel with the king with reproachful words’

and so spoke the crowd, but Ody, sacker of cities, rose up holding his staff, and beside him flashing eyed Athena, appearing as a herald, and commanded his men to be silent so that the sons of Atreus both near and far could hear his words together and learn the plan. He intending well, addressed the assembly and spoke among them,
‘Son of Atreus, now truly leader, the Archaeans want to make you the most blameworthy among all mortal men, nor will they complete the promise to you which they promised to here yet marching from argos land of pastures, destroy well walled Ilios to return home.’
