φής, ἢ καταρνῇ μὴ δεδρακέναι τάδε;

ᾔδησθα κηρυχθέντα μὴ πράσσειν τάδε;

καὶ δῆτ᾿ ἐτόλμας τούσδ᾿ ὑπερβαίνειν νόμους;

δώσειν· θανουμένη γὰρ ἐξῄδη, τί δ᾿ οὔ;
ζῇ, πῶς ὅδ᾿ οὐχὶ κατθανὼν κέρδος φέρει;

Kreon
And you, while you bow your head to the earth, do you say or deny that you did these things?

Antig
I say I did do it and no not deny not.

Kreon
You may carry yourself to wherever you wish, free from your heavy/grievous responsibility.
But you, tell me not at length but the short version, did you know that an proclaiment had been made forbidding this?

Antig
I knew, why would I not? for it was wellknown.

Kreon
And so you dared to overstep these laws?

Antig
Because Zeus did not proclaim these things to me, nor Justice has who lives with the gods below founded laws such as these among mortals, nor did I think that the mortal announcements were so strong as to be able to overrun the unwritten and secure laws of the gods. For they live not now or yesterday but for all time, and no one knows from where they sprung. I am not likely to pay the penalty to the gods for this, fearing the mind/will of no man. I know well that I will die, how could I not? Even without your announcements. If I die before my time, I say it is a gain. Anyone who lives among many bad people, as I do, how could he not bear dying as profit? In this way for me to attain this fate is no pain, but if I had endured he from my mother having died being unburied, I would be grieved by that. I am not grieved by this. If I now seem to you to happen to be acting foolish, I incur the charge of foolishness from a fool.

Chorus

The breeding of rudeness of the child is from the rufe father. Nor does she know how to give way to bad.

θέλεις τι μεῖζον ἢ κατακτεῖναί μ᾿ ἑλών;

Kreon
But know that especially harsh minds fall often, and the strongest sword baked very hard in the fire you see crushed and broken the most. I know wild horses have been trained by a small bit, for it is not permitted to have a great mind (pride) when he is a slave to his neighbour.
This girl knew well how to run riot at that time, when she overran the established laws. when she did it, this outrage it was a second, she exults in it and does laughing. In truth then, I am no man, she is the man, if this power is placed to her without harm. but either my sister or someone closer to me than those who meet with Zeus of the household, she and her sister will not escape a terrible fate. for in truth I charge the other equally for the planning of this burial. I saw her just now outside, going crazy and not with her mind. Before when thieves are plotting nothing straight in the dark, the mind is often taken.
However I hate whenever someone is caught in wickedness then wants to make it beautiful/gloss over.

Antig
what do you want more than to take me and kill me?

Kreon
Nothing. having that, I have everything.

Antig
Then why you do delay? None of your speeches are pleasing to me, and may nothing ever be pleasing, in this way I am displeasing to you. Moreover from where could i have held glory and good repute than lying my brother in funeral rites? I say that this is would be pleasing to all here, if fear did not hold their tongues. but tyranny is well blessed and it is possible for it to do and say whatever it wants.

σὺ δ᾿ οὐκ ἐπαιδῇ, τῶνδε χωρὶς εἰ φρονεῖς;

οὔκουν ὅμαιμος χὠ καταντίον θανών;

πῶς δῆτ᾿ ἐκείνῳ δυσσεβῆ τιμᾷς χάριν;

τίς οἶδεν εἰ κάτω ᾿στιν εὐαγῆ τάδε;

φήσεις μετασχεῖν, ἢ ᾿ξομῇ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι;

A

Kreon
you alone of the Cadmeans see it this way.

Antig
They see it, but they force down their tongues for you.

Kreon
Are you not ashamed if you think differently from them?

Antig
There is no shame in honouring your own flesh and blood.

Kreon
was he not your kin, who died on the other side?

Antig
akin from the same mother and father.

Kreon
how do you honour a favour that is unpious to him?

Antig
The dead corpse will not bear witness for that.

Kreon
if you honour him equally with the unpious one.

Antig
it was the brother who perished, not the slave.

Kreon
He destroyed this land, while set against it.

Antig
Nevertheless, Hades craves these customs.

Kreon
But the useful does not obtain an equal share of the bad.

Antig
who know if this is pure for those below.

Kreon
indeed not you do not love those you hated even when dead.

Antig
indeed not, my nature is to love, not hate.

Kreon
now go down and love them if you must, a woman will never rule while I am living.

Chorus
and truly, Ismene from the gates, letting her tears fall down as a loving sister. a cloud above her brow marring her blood red cheek, it moistens her fair cheek.

Kreon
you, who escaped notice in my home as a viper lurking, drink me, I did not learn that I was supporting two pests/plagues, two revolutions against my throne, come now, tell me, will you say whether you had a share in the burial or will you deny knowledge of it?

Ism
I did the deed, if she agrees, and I share and bear the responsibility.

Antig
But justice will not let you do this, since you neither were you willing, nor did share.

Ism
But in your misfortunes, I am not ashamed to make myself your partner in calamity.

Antig
of whose deed it is, Hades and those below are witness. Love with words is not a friend I love.
