I Olfactory nerve
Function: (sensory) olfaction
Foramen: Cribriform foramina
II Optic nerve
Function: (sensory) vision
Foramen: Optic foramen
III Oculomotor nerve
Function: (somatic) moves eyeball and elevates upper eyelid. (parasympathetic) innervates sphincter papillae to constrict pupil
Foramen: Superior Orbital Fissure
IV Trochlear nerve
Function: (somatic) moves eyeball inferior and laterally
Foramen: Superior Orbital Fissure
V Trigeminal nerve
Sensory function:
-The ophthalmic branch conducts sensory impulses from cornea, nose, forehead, and anterior scalp
-the maxillary branch conducts sensory impulses from nasal mucosa, palate, gums, and cheek
-the mandibular branch conducts sensory impulses from the anterior 2/3 of tongue, skin of the chin, lower jaw, lower teeth, and 1/3 auricle of the ear.
Somatic motor function: innervates muscles of mastication and other muscles of the lower facial region
Foramen: Ophthalmic branch - superior orbital fissure
Maxillary branch - Foramen rotundum
Mandibular branch - foramen ovale
VI Abducens nerve
Function: Innervates lateral rectus of eyeball abduction of eye
Foramen: Superior Orbital Fissure
VII Facial nerve
Function: (motor) muscles of facial expression. (sensory) anterior 2/3 taste tongue. (parasympathetic) activates submandibular, sublingual and lacrimal glands.
Foramen: Stylomastoid foramen
VIII Vestibulocochlear nerve
Function: (sensory) hearing and equilibrium impulses
Foramen: Internal acoustic meatus
IX Glossopharyngeal nerve
Function: (sensory) taste posterior 1/3 tongue and sensory info - blood pressure/chemistry. (motor) muscles of pharynx. (parasympathetic) activate parotid salivary gland
Foramen: Jugular foramen
X Vagus nerve
Function: (sensory) back of throat. (motor) muscles of pharynx. (parasympathetic) thoracic and abdominal viscera
Foramen: Jugular foramen
XI Accessory nerve
Function: (motor) trapezius and sternocleidomastoid
Foramen: Jugular foramen
XII hypoglossal nerve
Function: (motor) muscles of the tongue
Foramen: Hypoglossal canal
