Symbolic of the poor
More specifically the industrial poor who work away in factories struggling to make ends meet and so very often the victims of extreme deprivation
The fact that they have came from a ghost is symbolising how the poor had been forgotten, they have been neglected by the wider society

‘Wretched’ a very unhappy state, used to express anger. Highlights state of poor, dickens view
‘Abject’ extremely unpleasant and degrading, a person completely without pride or dignity

‘Ragged’ not controlled, uneven. Symbolic to he poor by the conditions they face

Christians identifies the devil with the serpent who tempted Adam and Eve and described him as a ‘fallen angel’ who terrorises the world through evil.
The devil is the antithesis of truth, and she’ll be condemned together with the fallen angels who follow him to eternal fire at the last judgement
Devil synonymous with evil. Suffering cut the hands of mankind
