Dickens develops our understanding of Scrooge as he reacts emotionally to the mercy of the boy left at school for Christmas
‘Scrooge said he knew it. And he sobbed’

Fan symbolises the best of youth: innocence and goodness
She also contrasts the dark, cold, lonely, aspect of Scrooge’s childhood we witnessed
She shows Scrooge has experienced both neglect and goodness in his life
