- would not have to wait 2-3 weeks to compare IgG levels in acute and convalescent samples
- faster results; testing of only a single sample

- would not have to worry about detecting maternal antibodies
- faster results; testing only a single sample instead of sequential samples during baby’s first 6 months of life
