Since Alaska had gold they made the conclusion that there may be more gold out there

Wanted to secure new markets for American made goods including both manufactured and agricultural

Used social Darwinism- survival of the fittest - biggest eats the smallest - big wins
Just like european countries got big from taking over countries in order for America to be a world power we have to do the same

Alfred Theyrt Mahan wrote a book arguing that any country that is strong is due to their robust navy -> Congress opened constructive of a massive new steel fleet of ships

One of the Spanish ships blew up with 200 Americans ( was by accident but at the time thought it was on purpose
America calls war on Spain - we win and Cubans are free
As a result the Cubans have the platt amendment - saying the us is allowed to intervene militarily if economic interests were threatened

McKinley secretary Hay saw American opportunities in China disappearing so he saw an opportunity to act quickly
Hay sent open door policy to Europe - which they didn’t respond to but hay saw it as victory and America held on some trading rights in China

A

Well we still had the Monroe doctrine signed in 1823 stating we won’t start with foreign countries, unless they start with us
And later on it was hard to keep because as the frontier closed and foreign trade was helping the us economy
People were in favor of imperialism just taking over the country
Yet while with some countries we were diplomatic like alaska - there are some places we were harsh with like Hawaii and we helped Cuba but started a war with Spain and in return took one of their countries they had imperialists on = phillipenes

A

The journalists known as the muskrats by teddy roosevelt
They focused on the underbelly of America the corruption aspect to it
Upton Sinclair focused on the unsanitary aspect of meat packages - few thumbs fell in there
Ida tarbell exposed John d Roosevelt standard oil company (major big business)
Jacob riis- took pictures how the other half lives in unsanitary conditions diseasease ridden tenements

A

Expansion of democracy

Ex: in Tammany hall - wanted voting power back into the hands of the ppl = secret ballot

Before there were high political bosses who handed out favors in exchange for people to vote for them

Passed direct election of senators - during gilded age many of the senators were in the hands of millionaires and big business pol and they got their position bc of the state legislatures who belonged to those big businesses (17th amendment)

Passed 18th amendment - American prohibition- made the manufacture and selling of alcohol illegal
