Idk Flashcards
How did the southerners and northerners differ based on how they got their money
S = agricultural N = industrial
What was life like in the south before the war
Well they had many crops and fields that needed attending so that’s why they had their slaves
What happened once the war was over in the south
Well slavery was abolished and the southerners had no one to rlly tend their crops
What did the southerners come up with?
Sharecropping - where the worker gave seed and supplies to the worker (black person) for a share of the harvest
They had to sign a contract bounding them to the plantation and owner = coerced servitude
What was the era after the civil war known as
The reconstruction era = to rebuild
How did the reconstruction era end
The compromise of 1877
In your essay Michelle
What do you write about after the reconstruction era
Well how after the war people needed a fresh start needed to move somewhere new that where we have the western migration moving to the frontier
Why would people move west
For independence, self sufficiency it was a land of opportunity
What was life like in the west economically
Well farming was big and it wa s being taken over by machines
There were small farmers who weren’t able to access to having these machines
Was it only hard for the small farmers
No also the big farmers due to the industrial trust - which kept manufactured goods at a high cost and the manufactured goods also benefited the big farmers
What other change affected the farmers
The high rates of railroads - they used railroads to sell their crops and and get goods
How did the farmers react
They revolted against the railroad forming the national grange movement
What did the national grange movement do
It created laws to regulate the rate of railroads
How would this be enforced
Through the interstate commerce committee
What is imperialism
Expansion of one country’s political economic and military influence over another country
What was the arguments over imperialism
Well there were two sides
The imperialists and anti-imperialists
What did the imperialists have to say
Gold, markets, social Darwinism, navy
Since Alaska had gold they made the conclusion that there may be more gold out there
Wanted to secure new markets for American made goods including both manufactured and agricultural
Used social Darwinism- survival of the fittest - biggest eats the smallest - big wins
Just like european countries got big from taking over countries in order for America to be a world power we have to do the same
Alfred Theyrt Mahan wrote a book arguing that any country that is strong is due to their robust navy -> Congress opened constructive of a massive new steel fleet of ships
What did the anti imperialists have to say
Self determination for nations - nation should decide for itself who should rule and what laws should be passed
What did yellow journalists fo
Published exaggerated stories of how Spanish were treated Cubans - American themselves felt that the us must intervene
So what happens btwn Spain and America
One of the Spanish ships blew up with 200 Americans ( was by accident but at the time thought it was on purpose
America calls war on Spain - we win and Cubans are free
As a result the Cubans have the platt amendment - saying the us is allowed to intervene militarily if economic interests were threatened
What happens after Spanish American war
We go full empire - annexation of phillipenes from Spain
We sent out fleets and began bombarding the Spanish fleet there
From there allied with Filipino nationals and mounted a land envision that ended with the overthrow of spain
Hawaii
American settlers overthrown Hawaii monarch - annexation happened in 1898
American empire through economics:
Open door policy
With who what is it
China
China was overtaken by Europe and split up into European spheres of influence
McKinley secretary Hay saw American opportunities in China disappearing so he saw an opportunity to act quickly
Hay sent open door policy to Europe - which they didn’t respond to but hay saw it as victory and America held on some trading rights in China
What was the internal conflict abt imperialism
Well we still had the Monroe doctrine signed in 1823 stating we won’t start with foreign countries, unless they start with us
And later on it was hard to keep because as the frontier closed and foreign trade was helping the us economy
People were in favor of imperialism just taking over the country
Yet while with some countries we were diplomatic like alaska - there are some places we were harsh with like Hawaii and we helped Cuba but started a war with Spain and in return took one of their countries they had imperialists on = phillipenes
Who were the progressives
Group of people who worked on issues like the growing power of big businesses
Uncertainties in the economy that erupted due to the panic of 1893
Worked on the issue btwn labor unions and their employers
Wanted to break control of political machines
Deal with alcohol
How did progressives bring attention to social problem
The journalists known as the muskrats by teddy roosevelt
They focused on the underbelly of America the corruption aspect to it
Upton Sinclair focused on the unsanitary aspect of meat packages - few thumbs fell in there
Ida tarbell exposed John d Roosevelt standard oil company (major big business)
Jacob riis- took pictures how the other half lives in unsanitary conditions diseasease ridden tenements
How did progressives bring attention to political problems and what was their goal
Expansion of democracy
Ex: in Tammany hall - wanted voting power back into the hands of the ppl = secret ballot
Before there were high political bosses who handed out favors in exchange for people to vote for them
Passed direct election of senators - during gilded age many of the senators were in the hands of millionaires and big business pol and they got their position bc of the state legislatures who belonged to those big businesses (17th amendment)
Passed 18th amendment - American prohibition- made the manufacture and selling of alcohol illegal
What’s initiative
Referendum and recall
Expansion of democracy
Initiative - voters could require legislature to consider a bill that they chose to ignore
Referendum- voters themselves could vote on the adoption of proposed laws
Recall - established a way to remove a corrupt politician before their term is up
How was the gilded age
Progressives
Ppl were left helpless in the face of big business ainterest and govt in many ways
They got ppls backs
Fredrick Taylor
Published book about how factory work should be more efficient
He actually went to the factories timed them and gave them how much they should work
And it increased productivity and earning way more profits
What did black progressives do
Worked to achieve social justice among races
Two organization were formed to abolish all forms of segregation and education for black children
How were the things that the progressives were fighting for/pushing for actually come about
When teddy got elected he was known as the trust buster - broke up monopolies - Sherman Antitrust act
He passed the food and drug act and meat inspection act for consumer protection make sure everything is good
