- Emergence of online identities provide people with the opportunity to decide what kind of identity and appearance they might like to choose
- The kinds of identity someone chooses to take on reveals information about an individuals attitudes to society

- Technological advances have led to greater capacity of information being passed to individuals
- This means people have a greater range of choices and information which allow unique identities to develop
- Globalisation and the increase in technological advances have meant that traditional sources of identity (social class) have become less significant

- People’s use of technology has become embedded in their daily lives as they are becoming cyborgs. (People are part human and part machine)
- The ways people interact with technology defines their identity
- In a postmodern era of society people are able to select and develop different aspects of their identity

- Explains how cyborgs offer women the chance to transcend their gender and avoid traditional assumptions and roles
- This allows them to engage differently with others online due to them having more control over their identity

- Individuals can adopt multiple online personalities as it is constructed by the user
- Online activities can leave visible traces which can be captured, tracked and shared.
