Cultural defence Flashcards
Cultural defence
- In response to the threat of loss of local culture, cultural defence has emerged
- Local cultures are being protected and promoted
Mohammadi:
- Simple image of western media and cultural domination over all the rest of the world is exaggerated
- It ignores the important complex interactions that occurs between different cultures
Giddens:
- Reverse colonisation
- The western powers aren’t actually dominating less powerful groups, it’s actually the other way around
- E.g. The Mexicanisation of California
- This has resulted in Mexican food, dress and music become a part of Californian culture
- As Mexico is significantly poorer than the US, it suggests that it isn’t simply the powerful who impose their culture in the less rich
Croteau and Hoynes:
- Global digital media companies have been forced to account for local practices and adapt their material
- This ensures that their companies grow and succeed all over the world
Evidence and arguments for the ways new social media maintains cultural differences:
Glocalisation = Blogs focus on the local interpretation of events
Facebook have recently added a facility which produces specially designed global pages which allows users to share ideas that reflect local issues
Indigenous people use the internet to protect their way of life = Organises like Tribalnet empower indigenous people which raises awareness and fundraising
The role in internet in fundamentalist groups = Extremist terrorist groups such as the Taliban, Islamic fundamentalists use the internet to gain support and protect their interests
