What is identity?
It is sameness that is based around the characteristic or features you share with others.
Woodward (2000) view on identity?
Argues that for someone to have an identity an element of choice is required.
Bradley (1996)
Passive and Active identity.
What is Passive Identity?
One you were either born/socialised into.
What is Active Identity?
People actively choose to pursue. e.g. a footballer.
Sex
Classifies people as being male or female based on their biological characteristics.
Gender
Describes socially constructed behaviour.
Behaviour which is made/shaped by the social world in which we live.
Parsons (Functionalist Sociologist - 1950s)
Sex-role differentiation.
Instrumental - describes the role that men should adopt (to go out and earn money).
Expressive - describe the caring role that women should take on (to look after the home and children).

Fluid
shaped and constructed through their experiences which are often quite gendered
