Is it mainstream?
YES - Ken loach’s name is used as a USP, he is a well known director and emphasised on all marketing techniques. It was released in other countries like Brazil, Japan and France
NO - its low budget = natural lighting, unknown actors, Newcastle setting, no music. Shows what mainstream media doesn’t show of Britain. Wasn’t made to attract large audiences but to raise awareness - subverting Curran + Seaton’s profit and power theory. Didn’t go global as in America it was hard to understand accent and wasn’t set in capital places like London. Is niche and alternative. Being independent = allows creativity and diversity and not driven by profit or power
Audience
left wing, northern areas as they are more likely to be left wing due to political issues in the 80s
