Liver Biopsy - Prussian Blue stains Haemosiderin Blue
BM examination if Aetiology complex - perls stains blue if iron present
Common Causes
Inadequate Iron intake (9mg men , 15mg women)
Loss of iron from body (desquamated skin) (menstrual bleeding)
Rapid growth in kids
Clinical Presentation
Pallor of mucous membranes
Conjunctival mucosa (eyes)
Brittle nails
Ulceration around corner mouth
Treatment
Original cause dealt with (worm=bleeding)
Ferrous sulphate (100-200mg daily) (2g/dl rise for 3wks)
What happens if treatment isnt working
Could be severe malabsorption syndrome
B12 / folate deficiency
Incorrect diagnosis - thalasaemia
