Ice & Rain Protection Flashcards
What areas of the CRJ-700 are protected against ice accretion?
- The wing leading edges
- The engine cowls
- Windshields and Side Windows
- The Air Data Probes
What provides ice protection for the wing leading edges and engine cowling areas?
Engine bleed air
What occurs to the N2 gauges when the wing anti-icing is selected?
White arcs are displayed on the N2 gauge between 0%-77%. The arcs remind the pilots that N2 core speed should be kept at a high rpm when the wing anti-ice is on to ensure an adequate flow of bleed air from the engine.
How many ice detectors are installed on the CRJ-700?
Two
How does the ice detector provide ice accretion information to the cockpit?
Either an ICE caution message or an ICE advisory message
What does an amber “ICE” caution message indicate to the pilots?
The ice detectors have detected ice and the wing and cowl anti-ice systems are not selected on.
What does a green “ICE” advisory message indicate to the pilots?
The ice detectors have detected ice or are still detecting ice and the wing and cowl anti-ice systems are selected on
Where does the left wing anti-icing system normally receive bleed air?
The left engine
Where does the right wing anti-ice system normally receive bleed air?
The right engine
What is the function of the Wing Anti-Ice Cross Bleed rotary switch on the Bleed Air Control Panel?
It allows the pilot to select both or either engine as the source of anti-icing bleed air.
Why is the bleed air output increased when the slats are extended?
When the slats are extended, the wing leading edge is maintained at a higher temperature.
What is the function of the anti-ice system piccolo tubes located in the inner surface of the leading edges?
To allow for the uniform spraying of hot bleed air onto the inner surfaces of the leading edges of the wings
How is the hot bleed air routed to the slats from the piccolo tubes?
Via a telescopic duct to slat #1 and then span wise to slats 2 and 3.
What occurs after a wing overheat is detected?
- The associated anti-icing valve is automatically closed
- The red WING OVHT warning is displayed on the Primary page
- The overheated wing leading edge is displayed in red on the Ant-Ice synoptic page
What is the function of the FROM LEFT position of the Wing Anti-Ice Cross Bleed selector located on the Bleed Air Control Panel?
This position closes the right wing anti-icing valve and allows both wings to be anti-iced with bleed air from only the left engine.
What is the function of the NORMAL position of the Wing Anti-Ice Cross Bleed selector located on the Bleed Air Control Panel?
The left wing leading edge is anti-iced with bleed air from the left engine and the right wing leading edge is anti-iced with bleed air from the right engine.
What is the function of the FROM RIGHT position of the Wing Anti-Ice Cross Bleed selector located on the Bleed Air Control Panel?
This position closes the left wing anti-icing valve and allows both wings to be anti-iced with bleed air from only the right engine
How are the air data probes protected against ice accretion?
They are electrically heated
What occurs to the pitot heaters when an engine generator is operating and the probe switches are off during ground operations?
Half power is applied to the pitot heads
What will occur to the pitot heaters when an engine generator is operating and the probe switches are on during ground operations?
- Half power is applied to the pitot heads
- Full power is applied to the static ports and AOA sensors
What will occur if APU or external power is applied to the aircraft with the probes switches in the OFF position during ground operations?
Nothing is heated
What will occur if APU or external power is applied to the aircraft with the probe switches in the ON position during ground operations?
- Half power is applied to the pitot heads
- Full power is applied to the static ports and AOA vanes
What function will the Air Data Sensor Heater Controller (ADSDC) perform after takeoff regardless of probe or generator switch position?
Full power is applied to all pitot tubes, static ports, AOA vanes, and the TAT probe
What is the function of the LOW position of the Windshield / Window Heater switch?
To heat the side windows and windshields at a low temperature setting for de-fogging and de-misting
What is the function of the HI position of the Windshield / Window Heater switch?
To apply a higher temperature setting to the windshields to shed ice accumulations
What will occur if the WSHLD Heat switch is brought from the OFF to the HI position during ground operations?
A normal warm-up cycle is first completed and then the windshields are heated to a higher temperature
What three separate functions does the Ice DET TEST switchlight perform?
- Icing Indicator
- Ice Detection System testing
- ADSHC System testing
What is a functional ice detection system test if the leading edges are cool (below 19 degrees c)?
- Amber ICE switchlight is illuminated
- Amber ICE caution message appears on the Primary page
- ADS HEAT TEST OK green Advisory message id displayed on the Status page
What message will appear during an ice detection system test if the leading edges have a raised temperature do to ambient conditions (above 19 degrees c)?
- Green ICE Advisory message appears on the Status page
- ADS HEAT TEST OK green Advisory message id displayed on the Status page
