6
Q

How does the engine fire detection system operate?

A

One of the internal wires carries electrical current and the other is grounded to the outer sheathing at the control unit. The resistance of the insulation (thermistor) between the two wires will decrease with an increase in temperature. When the electrical resistance decreases to a trip point, electrical current from the live wire conducts to the second internal wire and a fire or overheat indication is generated.

7
Q

What is the benefit of having a dual loop system?

A
  • A dual-loop system minimizes the possibility of false fire warnings. Both loops must sense the fire or overheat condition under exacting parameters before fire indications are generated
  • Dual loops also provide greater dispatch capability as the aircraft can be dispatched with a faulted loop and still maintain fire and overheat protection.

8
Q

How does a failure in a single detection loop affect the other operating loop?

A

Each individual control circuit and its related sensing loop is monitored so that in the event of a malfunction of one loop, the second loop maintains the capability of detecting a fire.

11
Q

How is the engine fire extinguishing agent released from its associated bottle?

A

When the green bottle “BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH” switchlight is pressed, electrical current fires the squib in the associated bottle and pressurized halon is directed into the selected engine nacelle.

Q

What are the cockpit indications after the BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH switchlight is pressed?

A

Immediate confirmation that the squibss have operated is provided by display of the “ENG BTL 1 (2) LO” caution (amber) message on the primary page and the “BOTTLE 1 (2) ARMED PUSH TO DISCH” switchlight will go out, indicating that the extinguishing agent has been released (low pressure). An additional indication is the display of “L OR R ENG SQB” status (white) message is displayed.

16
Q

How many fire / overheat detection loops are installed around the APU?

A

Two

17
Q

How many extinguishing bottles are available for APU fire suppression?

A

One located in the aft equipment compartment.

18
Q

What occurs after an APU fire is detected while on the ground?

A

The APU shuts down automatically, then five seconds later, the APU fire bottle automatically discharges halon into the APU enclosure.

19
Q

What occurs after an APU fire is detected while in flight?

A

The APU shuts down automatically, however, pilot action is required to discharge the fire extinguisher bottle.

20
Q

What occurs after pushing the APU fire push glareshield switchlight?

A
  • The bottle squibs are armed
  • APU fuel feed shutoff valve closes
  • APU fuel shutoff valve closes, shutting down the APU
  • APU load control valve closes
  • APU generator is tripped off
21
Q

What are the cockpit indications after the APU ARMED PUSH TO DISCH switchlight is pressed?

A

Immediate confirmation that the squibs have operated is provided by display of the “APU BTL LO” caution (amber) message on the primary page and the “APU ARMED PUSH TO DISCH” switchlight will go out, indicating that the extinguishing agent has been released (low pressure). An additional indication is the display of “APU SQB” caution (amber) message is displayed.

22
Q

What is the function of pressing the AFT CARGO SMOKE PUSH switchlight?

A
  • Selects the bay where the fire extinguishing agent will be discharged.
  • Arms the fire extinguishers and causes the illumination of the single BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH green switchlight.
  • Shuts off the aft cargo bay heater and closes the air conditioning shutoff valve in the aft baggage compartment.
23
Q

What is the function of pressing the FWD CARGO SMOKE PUSH switchlight?

A
  • Selects the bay where the fire extinguishing agent will be discharged.
  • Arms the fire extinguishers and causes the illumination of the single BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH green switchlight.
24
Q

What is the function of the CARGO BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH switchlight located on the center pedestal?

A

Pushing the cargo bottle armed push to discharge switchlight sends an electrical signal to both cargo fire extinguishing bottles causing simultaneous discharge of both bottles.

25
Q

Do both cargo fire extinguishing bottles discharge at the same rate?

A

Both bottles are fired at the same time but only bottle number 1 discharges immediately (high rate discharge ). Bottle number 2 discharges its contents slowly (low rate discharge ) to maintain halon concentration in the cargo bay for an extended period of time (60 minutes) and prevent the re-ignition of a smoldering fire.

26
Q

How many fire extinguishing bottles are available for cargo fire suppression?

A

Two

27
Q

What is the location of the cargo fire extinguishing bottles?

A

Both cargo bay fire extinguishing bottles are installed in the right wing fairing.

28
Q

When will the CARGO SMOKE EICAS indication extinguish after activation?

A

When the smoke detectors no longer detect smoke and maintenance has reset the detectors on the ground.

29
Q

What are the indications of a lavatory smoke detection?

A
  • The lavatory smoke detector will sound the alarm.
  • The red indicator light, on the smoke detector, illuminates.
  • The SMOKE AFT LAV message is displayed on the EICAS primary page.
30
Q

What is the function of the lavatory Fire Suppression System?

A

To put out a fire in the lavatory trash bin

31
Q

How does the lavatory fire suppression system operate?

A

A two-nozzle fire extinguisher is mounted on a bracket next to the waste bin. A heat-sensitive capsule, installed on the end of each nozzle, will melt when subjected to heat and will release the fire extinguishing agent into the waste bin area.

32
Q

What is the function of the main landing gear bay overheat system?

A

Provides overheat detection and warning of an overheat condition in the main landing gear wheel bins.

33
Q

How many overheat detection loops are installed in the main landing gear wheel bins?

A

One single-loop detection system installed around the top of the inner surface of each main wheel bin.

34
Q

What occurs when the MLG BAY OVHT spring-loaded switch is held in the OVHT position?

A
  • Triple chime / master warning switchlight illumination
  • MLG BAY OVHT warning message displayed on ED 1
  • Aural warning “Gear Bay Overheat”
35
Q

What occurs when the OVHT TEST WARN FAIL spring-loaded switch is held in the WARN FAIL position?

A
