Fire Protection Flashcards
What are the functions of the FIDEXX Unit?
- Monitoring of the fire detection loops
- Sending Fire / Overheat signals to the EICAS
What three areas are provided with fire and overheat detection?
Engine area, APU & main landing gear
Where are the smoke detectors installed in the CRJ-700?
The lavatory, forward cargo compartment (C-3) & the aft cargo compartment (C-4).
How many smoke detectors are installed in each cargo bay compartment?
Three in C-3 and 2 in C-4
What type of detection system is used for engine fire / overheat protection?
The core compartment of each engine is monitored by two fire/overheat detection loops.
How does the engine fire detection system operate?
One of the internal wires carries electrical current and the other is grounded to the outer sheathing at the control unit. The resistance of the insulation (thermistor) between the two wires will decrease with an increase in temperature. When the electrical resistance decreases to a trip point, electrical current from the live wire conducts to the second internal wire and a fire or overheat indication is generated.
What is the benefit of having a dual loop system?
- A dual-loop system minimizes the possibility of false fire warnings. Both loops must sense the fire or overheat condition under exacting parameters before fire indications are generated
- Dual loops also provide greater dispatch capability as the aircraft can be dispatched with a faulted loop and still maintain fire and overheat protection.
How does a failure in a single detection loop affect the other operating loop?
Each individual control circuit and its related sensing loop is monitored so that in the event of a malfunction of one loop, the second loop maintains the capability of detecting a fire.
What extinguishing agent is used for engine fire suppression?
Halon
What does the illumination of the green BOTTLE 1 (2) ARMED PUSH TO DISCHARGE glareshield switchlights indicate?
The respective bottle squib is armed.
How is the engine fire extinguishing agent released from its associated bottle?
When the green bottle “BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH” switchlight is pressed, electrical current fires the squib in the associated bottle and pressurized halon is directed into the selected engine nacelle.
What occurs after pressing the left or right ENGINE FIRE PUSH glareshield switchlights?
- The bottles squibs are armed
- The fuel feed shutoff valve closes
- The bleed air valves close
- The hydraulic shutoff valve closes
- Engine-driven generator is tripped off the line
What does the illumination of the green BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH glareshield switchlights indicate to the pilots?
The associated squib is armed and the extinguisher bottle pressure is normal.
What are the cockpit indications after the BOTTLE ARMED PUSH TO DISCH switchlight is pressed?
Immediate confirmation that the squibss have operated is provided by display of the “ENG BTL 1 (2) LO” caution (amber) message on the primary page and the “BOTTLE 1 (2) ARMED PUSH TO DISCH” switchlight will go out, indicating that the extinguishing agent has been released (low pressure). An additional indication is the display of “L OR R ENG SQB” status (white) message is displayed.
How many fire extinguishing bottles are available for each engine?
Two
