When to give antiviral for influenza?
Patients with flu symptoms AND are hospitalised/ high risk for complications/ severe, complicated or progressive illness
When to see a doctor for influenza?
Symptoms does not improve after 10 days or symptoms improved then develop new fevers, worsening SOB or cough
Complications of pharyngitis
Acute rheumatic fever & acute glomerulonephritis
Usual bacterial pathogen causing bacterial pharyngitis
Strep grp A - S. pyogenes
What is used to evaluate the need for S. pyogenes testing/ initiating Ab tx in pharyngitis?
Modified Centor Criteria
5 criteria for Modified Centor Criteria with 1 score
- Fever > 38
- Absence of cough
- Tonsillar exudates
- Swollen, tender anterior cervical lymph nodes
- 3 to 14 y/o
Common bacterial pathogens for sinusitis
Strep pneumoniae & H. influenzae
Complications of influenza
Primary viral pneumonia & secondary bacterial pneumonia, exacerbation of chronic resp disease, myocarditis
