A
  • Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis which is important in the mediation of pain, fever and inflammation
  • Provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects well suited to musculoskeletal injuries

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • GI irritation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Renal impairment
  • Uncommon - hypersensitivity reactions with urticaria and pruritus

Ibuprofen Contraindications

A
  • Active, suspected or known bleeding tendency
  • Hx of allergic reactions to NSAID’s
  • Pts with astha who have a Hx of wheeze post NSAID administration or who have not previously taken an NSAID
  • Active peptic ulcer disease or GI bleeding
  • Dehydration
  • Renal impariment
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe heart failure
  • Pts <7yrs of age
  • Self administration in last 4-6rhs
  • 1.2g within 24hrs for >12yrs of age
  • 800mg within 24hrs for pts >7yrs and <12yrs
