Sulfasalazine ADE
GI upset, rash, headache, arthralgias, hypersensitivity, aplastic anemia, fever, hepatotoxicity
Sulfasalazine Counseling
Take with food.
Improvement takes 4+ weeks; extended release agents
should not be crushed or chewed. Impairs folic acid absorption
Mesalamine ADE
Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, eructation, edema, dizziness, fever, pharyngitis
Mesalamine Counseling
Extended release agents should not be crushed or chewed; avoid antacids, H2RAs, PPIs
Olsalazine ADE
dose-related secretory diarrhea
Balsalazide ADE
headache, abdominal pain
Corticosteroids ADE
HPA axis suppression, increased risk of infection, immunosuppression, ↑glucose, ↑WBC, ↑ BP, weight gain, edema, alteration in mood/insomnia, osteoporosis (long term)
Corticosteroids Counseling
take oral preps with food to decrease stomach upset, do not stop abruptly
Azathioprine ADE
hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, n/v/d, infection, neutropenia, hair loss, pancreatitis, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, myelosuppression
Mercaptopurine ADE
hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, infection, neutropenia, nausea, hair loss, pancreatitis, hepatotoxicity, myelosuppression
Cyclosporine ADE
hypertrichosis, n/v, hyperglycemia, nephrotoxicity, HTN, hepatotoxicity, neurological toxicity, headache, infection, hyperuricemia
Methotrexate ADE
myelosuppression, hepatotoxicity, pulmonary toxicity
Metronidazole ADE
metallic taste, disulfiram-like reaction, nausea, paresthesias, glossitis, peripheral neuropathy with long-term use
Metronidazole Counseling
disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol
Ciprofloxacin Counseling
avoid taking with Ca2+ or iron products, vitamins, dairy
