- Antivirals
- Aspirin
- NSAIDs
- Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate, pamidronate)
- Potassium preparations
- Quinidine
- Ferrous sulfate or succinate; Note: Sustained release medications may present higher risk

- Female sex
- Bedridden patients
- Medication taken while supine or without water
- Patients with left atrial enlargement (may cause esophagus compression)
