how is prednisolone used to treat IBD
anti-inflammatory
reducing course over 6-8 weeks
what are the side effects of prednisolone
weight gain, risk of infection, mood changes, impaired glucose tolerance, osteoporosis risk
what is mesalazine
oral or enema/suppository
local inflammatory action
what treatment is used for ulcerative colitis
hydrocortisone 100mg qds for 5 days
ciclosporin qds
how are immunomodulators used in IBD
for flare ups caused by reducing prednisolone dose
single episode of severe colitis
when are thiopurines used
immunosuppressant following organ transplant
side effects are flu-like
what are biologics
antibodies derived from living cells
by injection or infusion
very expensive and complex
how are anti-TNF products used
target TNF-alpha pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in regulating immune system
side effects are risk of reaction, flu-like symptoms, risk of skin infection/cancer
what is the new biologic vedolizumab
targeted gut action to prevent lymphocyte tracking via interin inhibition of the gut
well tolerated
what is the new biologic ustekinumab
interleukin 12 and 23 inhibition (mediate t cell response in immune system)
also used in psoriasis
