Diagnosis of IBD

A
  • Endoscopy: examine bowel
  • Stool test rule out infection
  • Blood test; check for signs of inflammation
  • Biopsy during endoscopy

A
  • No cure
  • Treatment usually includes immunosuppressants to control immune response
  • And steroids to reduce inflammation
  • SEVERE: Surgery to remove parts of the bowel

  • Chronic inflammation of GIT
  • Effects end of small intestine and beginning of large intestine

IBD pharmacological intervention

A
  • Most common antibiotics: metronidazole and ciprofloxacin
  • Aminosalicylates: first treatment for mild or moderate IBD
  • Corticosteroids: stop inflammation
  • Immunosupressive e.g. azathiopurine and mercaptopurine, ciclosporin
  • Biological medicines: infliximab - expensive, for people who dont respond to steroids or immuno, by IV
