what is the literal meaning of ibadah
Abada- serve, submit, adore someone or something, be good or bad, be true or false
Abd- servant or a worshipper
what is the technical meaning of ibadah
man’s complete and unconditional submission to Allah’s will and commands in order to gain his pleasure in this world and hereafter
what is the two categories of ibadah
- ibadah al- khassah (specific ibadah)
- ibadah al- ammah (general ibadah)
explain ibadah al-khassah
- act of ibadah made obligatory upon muslims
- forms or timing of this ibadah have been establihed by Allah
- ways and methods of ibadah have been prescribe by Allah
- it comprises the pillars of islam

- all of a person’s noble and righteous deeds
- the activities could be personal, social, economic, political, or spiritual nature.(covers many scopes)
- Exp: seeking knowledge is one of the highest type of ibadah
- social courtesy and coorperation are acts of ibadah when done for Allah’s sake

- Divinely- ordained

- the source of ibadah in islam is derived from the revelation
- allah guide man on how to worship him, not man himself
- the rules that have been declared by islam will remain and applicable all the time
- the acts will be considered as ibadah if done sincerely for the purpose of seeking Allah’s pleasure

- islam established direct link between man and god
- no need to the intercession of any intermediaries to plead to god or seek forgiveness on behalf of others
- imam and religious scholars cannot be intermediaries between man and Allah since they are equal to ordinary human beings and do not enjoy immunity

- Allah does not impose on His servants obligation to perform an act of ibadah beyond his abilities
- islam provide alternative ruling when a person is facing severe hardship to perform an original ruling
- Exp: travelling while fasting in ramadhan may cause hardship to the traveller. He is allowed to break the fast and need to replace it

- the act must be recognizes by the shariah principles to be considered an ibadah
- if the work is done for noble intentions but it contradicts the shariah, it is not considered ibadah
- Exp: stealing to help the poor. stealing in contradict to shariah while help the poor is the noble intention. it is not an ibadah
- every muslim must make sure that his work is approved by the shariah

- perform all the works with a sincere intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah
- main condition of the good deeds to be accepted by Allah is that it must be sincere for the sake of Allah and in accordance with the shariah.

- activties that safeguard and promote maqasid al- shariah particularly the preservation of al- daruriyyat al- khamsah
- it must be beneficial to him, the family, the society and the country
- Exp: man wor as a fisherman to support his family and sell his catch to the community
- fulfilling the basic needs of others is considered ibadah in islam
- every muslim must ensure that his work is beneficial and not done for useless purpose

- one’s attitude and behaviour tend to be in line with his faith if he has a close relationship with god

- islam emphasizes politeness, forgiveness, courtesy, friendliness, helpfulness, justice and patience
- Every muslim should avoid doing a job imperfectly or carelessly

- muslim must make sure that his job does not prevent him from performing religious obligation towards Allah
- choose a job that allows us to carry out our responsibilites even low salary
- every muslim should prioritizes religious obligations more than worldly duties so that all his actions and works are considered ibadah
