hypothalamus Flashcards
why can reduced renal blood flow cause increased hematocrit
increase in erythropoietin
where does ADH regulates water permeability
distal CT; where urine gets concentrated
how does ADH result in an increase of AQ2s on the apical membrane
ADH → ADH receptors on basolateral membrane → cAMP activated by adenylyl cyclase →protein kinase A sends AQ2s to apical membrane
what is the issue with Central diabetes insipidus
not producing enough ADH; unable to properly retain water/concentrate urine
why does vasopressin (ADH) also cause vasoconstriction
equal affinity for V1 and V2 receptors (V1=vasoconstriction)
what is desmopressin
synthetic Vasopressin used to treat CDI; increases water retention without causing vasoconstriction
why do you need to be cautious about patients at risk for thrombotic events when using desmopressin
b/c it increases factor VIII & von Willebrand factor which increase clotting
what is somatotropin
analog of GH
what is responsible for the variability in milk production increase caused by somatotropin
- Primiparous cows < multiparous
- Ambient temp (HOT < cold)
- Feed consistency very important
somatotropin use in implicated in cases of ?
mastitis and laminitis
DM and acromegaly in dogs
what is the MOA of somatotropin
- Increases fat utilization by organs
- increases glycogen hydrolysis → more glucose available for milk
- Increases blood flow to mammary glands & causes increased nutrient extraction
- Increased CO
what are the off-targets of somatotropin
- may reduce ketosis (since it increases glucose availability)
- increases 1st time pregnancy rate but decreases subsequent pregnancies
- increases rate of twinning (bad)
