What levels is considered hypoglycaemic?
< 4mmol/L
HYPO symptoms

Hunger
Tremor
Tingling Lips
Palpitations
Extreme Moods

First line treatment of HYPO: If patient is conscious and able to swallow
Fast-acting carbohydrate by mouth (10-20g glucose/sucrose)
* 4-5 Glucose tablets
* 3-4 heaped teaspoonfuls of sugar

Repeat every 15 mins for 3 cycles
Long-acting carbohydrate or next meal if due to sustain blood glucose levels
- Avoid chocolate/biscuits (fat delays absoprtion)
- Sulphonylurea induced hypoglycaemia
HYPO: Oral administration not work / patient unconscious:
- IM glucagon
then
IV glucose
HYPO: and then if unresponsive after 10 mins
IV glucose
HYPO and betablockers
mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia
HYPO and NSAIDs
- NSAIDs have no significant influence on fasting glucose levels or on rates of glucose elimination
