Hypochromic Anemias: Iron Deficiency Flashcards
What are three types of anemia?
macrocytic
normocytic normochromic
microcytic hypochromic
What is macrocytic anemia?
defective nuclear maturation; low oxygen production
What is normocytic normochromic anemia?
Result of:
acute blood loss
hemolytic
renal failure- erythropoietin goes now= lower rbc production
chronic disease
What is cause of microcytic hypochromic anemia?
iron deficiency
What are signs and symptoms of anemia?
lower oxygen carry capacity
increase heart rate
higher stroke volmume
systolic murmurs
angina pectoris
high-output congestive heart failure
pulmonary congestion
ascities and edema
What are hypochromic anemias?
those w/ lower iron
iron deficiency is the common nutritional anemia in humans
caused by:
inadequate iron intake
malabsorption through gi tract
chronic blood loss
increase requirment during pregancy (Fe2/3+)
What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?
fatigue
exertional SOB
tachycaridia- compensation of the heart
pallor, headache, glossitis-swelling of the tongue
koilonychia (spoon nails)
lower cognitive function
pica: abnormal craving to chew on ice/chalk/crayon or dirt
