What does hyperventilation syndrome describe
The physical and emotional symptoms brought about by over breathing
How can over breathing effect the body
Reduces carbon dioxide levels
Which in turn reduces canonic acid in levels
Increasing the blood pH and respiratory alkalosis
what can respiratory alkalosis lead to
Tingling sensation in the mouth and extremities
Muscle spasms
What happens to cells int eh body as blood pH rises
The cells begin to produce lactic acid in attempt to counteract the respiratory alkalosis
List some symptoms of hyperventilation syndrome
- Breathlessness
- Tingling in limb extremities
- Muscle stiffness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Palpitations
- Tachycardia
- increased anxiety
Is hyperventilation syndrome life threatening
no it isn’t usually caused by an underlying physical problem
How can we manage hyperventilation
- Remove stressor
- Move patient to a calm environment
- Coach patient into slow breathing
- Coach patient to breath through pursed lips
- Tell patients to breath through their nose to restrict airflow
- Offer patient a glass of water
