hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic Flashcards
what is it called when there is high solute concentration but lower water?
hypertonic
what is it called when there is low solute concentration and high water concentration?
hypotonic
what is it called when there is equal parts solute and water?
isotonic
in what direction does water always move from?
hypotonic to hypertonic solution because water loves sodium!
what happens to cells without cell walls in osmosis when it’s placed in a HYPOTONIC solution?
water will move in and the cell will burst
what happens to a cell when its placed in a hypertonic solution?
water will leave the cell, causing it to shrivel up
what happens to a cell in an isotonic solution (cell without cell walls)
the water moving in and out is balanced because there is equal parts of water and solute concentration
what happens to a cell with cell walls in osmosis when they are put in hypotonic solution?
water moves into the cell, but the cell wall protects the cell from bursting (this is what allows them to stand up)
why wouldn’t plants like an isotonic solution?
since no pressure is being added to their walls, they won’t have that upright shape. rather, it makes them wilt
what happens in a hypertonic solution?
water will move out the cell causing the cells membrane to separate from cell wall
