Hypertension Flashcards
What is the meaning of hypertension?
An increase in blood pressure.
What is meant by a pre clinical state?
This is when the problem hasn’t shown itself (vague symptoms).
What is the prevalence of hypertension?
Higher in poor lifestyle choices (type 2 diabetes). More likely in Western countries (takeaways and not exercising).
Those who are male, black and older are more likely to be hypertensive.
Hypertension increasing as we have an ageing population (more likely with older people).
What is the definition of blood pressure?
This is the pressure exerted against the walls of the blood vessels (arteries).
What are the different types of blood pressure?
-systolic (LV contracting)
-diastolic (LV relaxing)
How is blood pressure calculated?
systolic/diastolic
What are the units for blood pressure?
mmHg.
What impact does the nervous system have on blood pressure?
Involves fight or flight causing heart rate to increase, generate tone (vasodilation, vasoconstriction).
What impact does the humoral system have on blood pressure?
To do with kidneys, blood volume, slower to have an effect.
What is the RAAS system?
The renin angiotestin aldosterone system.
What is the process of the RAAS system?
When there is low blood flow o the kidneys, renin is released which converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin 1 which is put into circulation. In the lungs, angiotensin 1 converted to angiotensin 2- is powerful vasoconstrictor.
Aldosterone is a Na and water retention which increases pressure and reduce amount of renin produced.
What is the meaning of ectopic?
Extra beats
What causes the heart to beat faster?
If the right atrium that is receiving blood is stretched (more blood)- beats faster.
How is blood pressure a negative feedback system?
When there is a detection of higher pressure, it is stretched and this sends a signal to the CV system as it is trying the reverse the direction of change (carotid bodies).
What are the types of hypertension?
-Primary/ essential
-Secondary
-Whitecoat
-Malignant
-Masked
