Q

describe the progression of type I hypersensitivity

A

It is an IgE mediated hypersensitivity in which first exposure causes antigen binding to B-cells which is presented to T-cells (Th2) cells. This causes isotype switching to IgE and these IgE antibodies are secreted. These antibodies bind FcεR on mast cells and basophils and upon second exposure causes degranulation and hypersensitivity reaction. Remember the role of IL-4 secreted by Th2 cells which influences B cells to switch to IgE production.

Q

describe the four possible outcomes of IgG mediated type II hypersensitivity

A
  1. IgG mediated phagocytosis
  2. ADCC through NK cells
  3. Complement activation to membrane attack complex destruction of pathogen
  4. Complement activation that leads to formation of C3b and C3b mediated phagocytosis

7
Q

describe Type III hypersensitivity

A

-antibodies become embedded in tissues (endothelial cell membranes) and attach to soluble antigens

-these now activated immune complexes attract inflammatory immune cells such as neutrophils which causes enzyme release and tissue destruction
