Hypersensitivity Flashcards
Type I Hypersensitivity
Immediate; involves IgE and histamine production
Type II Hypersensitivity
Cytotoxic; reaction of IgG with host cell membrane or antigen absorbed by host cell membrane
example: mismatched blood transfusion
Type III Hypersensitivity
Immune complex-mediated; formation of immune complex of antigen and antibody
immune complexes deposit in walls of blood vessels and results in inflammation/damage (esp in kidneys)
Type IV Hypersensitivity
Delayed; reaction between sensitized T cells with antigen and release of lymphokines which activates macrophages and causes inflammation
example: poison ivy, TB, transplant rejection
Symptoms of Type I Hypersensitivity
Can range from a runny nose to anaphylaxis
