Chronic Lung Diseases Flashcards
Chronic lung condition that involves irreversible tissue damage and air trapping in the lungs
COPD
Characterized by loss of lung elasticity and hyperinflation of the lung
Emphysema
Inflammation of the airways caused by chronic exposure to irritants, esp cig smoke
Chronic Bronchitis
Typical acid-base status of a pt with COPD
Partially compensated respiratory acidosis (air gets trapped so they can’t blow off extra CO2)
Number one cause of COPD
smoking
Complications of COPD
hypoxemia, acidosis, respiratory infections, cor pulmonale, dysrhythmias
Muscle spasm, edema, and thick secretions in the airway
asthma
Assessment findings of acute asthma exacerbation
audible wheeze, increased RR, accessory muscle use, cyanosis, hypoxemia
Peek flow zones
Green: 80-100% of personal best, no intervention
Yellow: 50-80% of personal best, use rescue drug and reassess
Red: < 50% of personal best, use rescue drugs and call 911
Order of drug therapy for acute asthma exacerbation
SABA (albuterol), inhaled steroid (Flovent), LABA (advair disk), leukotriene modifiers (Singulair), prednisone
O2, neb tx, call 911
Start an IV and if nothing else works you need to intubate
Major complication of pulmonary artery hypertension
cor pulmonale
Meds for pulmonary artery hypertension
warfarin (stop clots), CCBs (vasodilation), Prostacyclin agents (dilate pulmonary arteries, pt is dependent on this), digoxin, diuretics, O2
Sarcoidosis
autoimmune response where T cells damage lung tissue
causes granulomas to form in different areas of the body
Primary tx: corticosteroids
