Guillain-Barre Flashcards
Etiology of Guillain-Barre
autoimmune disorder that usually follows a viral infection
immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system myelin sheath
S/S of Guillain-Barre
progressive muscle weakness that starts in the lower extremities and works its way up; can lead to paralysis and person dependent on a ventilator
important to know that most people recover from even the worst cases
Diagnostics of Guillain-Barre
elevated CSF protein, electromyography (EMG) tests electrical activity in skeletal muscle, albumin (prognostic biomarker for GBS), renal status
Prognosis
symptoms begin to reside about 2 weeks after maximal weakness; mostly resolves within 1 year
Important to monitor in GBS
O2 status
