Hypersensitivity Flashcards
Dentinal Hypersensitivity
occurs when vital dentin exposed to oral environment. rapid, short, sharp pain. *cannot be attributed to any other pathology
Types of Hypersensitivity Pain
Thermal (extreme temps), Tactile (instrumentation, osc) Chemical (acidic foods, acid reflux, topical meds)
Hydrodynamic Theory
dentin exposed > fluid in tubercles > pain transmitted by odontoblasts + receptors > to pulp
Smear Layer
salivary proteins that block entrance of dentinal tubercles.
Pre-Eruption causes of Hypersensitivity
enamel + cementum do not meet [10%]
Post-Eruption causes of Hypersensitivity
hard tissue [enamel] loss by abrasion/erosion/abfraction/caries. soft tissue loss by recession. + diet/tooth morph/oral habits/whitening/denitrifies/over instrumenting
Mild to Moderate Dentinal Hypersensitivity
OTC or Rx toothpaste (PreviDent)
Professional Treatments / Interventions
Fluoride varnish, Zarosen, Arginine, Calcium Carbonate, Light cured resin < to seal tubercles. DDS = laser therapy, restorations, perio surgery
