Fluoride Flashcards
Systemic Fluoride
PRE ERUPTION, ingested. water @ .7ppm, rX, vegetables, canned foods, formula
Fluoride Absorption
distributed by plasma, 50% deposited in teeth/bones, 50% excreted via kidneys
Systemic Fluoride and Tooth Development
happens during mineralization (DEJ) and maturation (surface) > caries resistance
Fluorosis
occurs during mineralization phase - small white spots (hypocalcification) or brown staining/pitting (hypoplasia)
Daily Recommended Systemic Fluoride Dose
1ppm = 1/2 mg
Fluorapetite Crystal
Carbonated hydroxyapetite crystal + fluoride
Benefits of Topical Fluoride
inhibits demineralization, enhances remineralization, inhibits caries process
Cariogenic Biofilm
Strep mutans, lactobacilli
Professionally applied fluoride: Gel
2.0% NaF 9,050ppm; 1-4 min application; no food/drink 30 min
Professionally applied fluoride: APF
1.23% Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride 12,300ppm; No food/drink 30 min
Professionally applied fluoride: Varnish
5% 22,600ppm; do not brush for 4-6 hours, no hard foods/ hot liquids - *“ROSIN” TREE NUT, PINE NUT OR TREE ALLERGIES
Prevident: Dry Mouth
1.1% NaF, 1x day
Prevident: Booster
1.1% NaF, high caries risk or ortho, 1x/day
Prevident: Sensitive
1.1% NaF, 5% Potassium Nitrate, 2x/day
Chlorhexidine
.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate rinse for high caries risk, high bacteria- kills s.mutans *doesnt work in conjunction w other fluoride denitrifies
