mild deficiency is asymptomatic
may cause tetany, muscle weakness, cardiac arrhythmias, neuropsychiatric changes and convulsions

A
loss of deep tendon reflexes, muscle paralysis, impaired consciousness, respiratory depression
anorexia, nausea, hypotension, bradycardia/heeart block
cardiac arrest

excessive intake eg. antacids, enemas, IV infusion
decreased excretion eg. kidney failure, volume depleetion
release from cells eg. rhabdomyolysis
