caused by
usually canida albicans, rarely other candida species
penile symptoms
red rash on genitals, especially under foreskin, may or may not be itchy
swelling of foreskin if severe
fissures
superficial erosions
vulvar/vaginal symptoms
thick white clumping vaginal discharge
itch, burning, soreness
superficial dyspareunia
external dysuria
excoriation, erythema, fissures, swelling
diagnosis
usually clinical diagnosis
otherwise high vaginal swab or self collected vagnal swab or penile swab for microscopy and culture
management in uncomplicated illness
vaginal azole creams eg. clotrimazole 10%
or 500mg clotrimazole vaginal pessary
or
fluconazole 150mg PO stat
recurrent candida management
treat each episode with longer course of azole cream and/or fluconazole 150mg PO for 3 doses, 3 days apart, followed by maintenance with fluconazole 150mg PO weekly for 6 months
treatment for candida glabrata
boric acid vaginal pessary
or nystatin
can oral azoles be used in pregnancy
