Hydrants, Hose And Branches Flashcards
What are the three features of a hydrant to conform to BS
65mm rounded thread
2000 litres per minute at 1.7 bar
Opens anti-clockwise
What information is found on a hydrant plate?
Size of hydrant
Distance to it
Whether it is single or double
What equipment makes up the hydrant gear?
Double headed stand pipe
Hydrant key and bar
What 2 leak detection devices may be encountered on a hydrant?
Screw on leak detection device
Magnetic leak detection device
When is hydrant testing done?
Yearly- visual
4 yearly- Get to work
Tested between April and October
What are the requirements of a good hose?
Seven to name
- Should be reliable
- Should be resistant to bursting, leaking, chemical damage or kinking when passing round bends and corners
- Should not stretch excessively when pressurised (5% maximum in length) and not expand excessively (10% maximum in diameter)
- Should be light and easy to handle. Able to be made up wet or dry.
- Should be durable. They should have a high resistance to abrasion and be easy to repair.
- Should be smooth surfaced internally to keep frictional loss to a minimum
- Should be capable of withstanding pressure changes and shock.
What are the four types of hose
45mm
70mm
90mm
150mm
90mm and 150mm hose use…… type of couplings. The …… coupling is an interlocking coupling connected by using……
90mm and 150mm hose use storz type of couplings. The storz coupling is an interlocking coupling connected by using 2 storz spanners.
Although modern hose are resistant to abrasion, chemical, rotting and shock, a lack of care could result in failure at a vital time. For this reason, the following rules should be observed (4 things)
- Hose should be ramped when laid across a road
- Hose should not be kinked when under pressure.
- Hose should not be made up when frozen
- Hose should be under-run and cleaned before stowing.
What type of coupling does 45mm and 70mm hose use?
Instantaneous hose coupling
What are the four colour codes for the bandit strap and which geographical area are they issued?
Yellow- Southern
Orange- Eastern
Green- Western
Black- Training
For the pressure test to what pressure is the hose charged to and then how should the pressure test be conducted.
Visually inspect the hose first
Only if satisfactory start pressure test.
During the test, a branch should be held correctly by two firefighters. It is important that the branch is not placed on the ground. The pump operator will observe the hose, and be ready to shut down if necessary. A nominated officer will oversee the test.
Connect each length of hose separately to a pump with a hand controlled branch attached.
Expel air from hose at low pressure then shut branch down.
Increase pressure to 15 bar. Allow pressure to build slowly.
Once at 15 bar sustain pressure for one minute.
Then reduce to 7 bar to visually inspect hose.
Record results on form 426.
What are the 4 flow settings of the RB101?
130 230 300 400 And flush
Explain what jet reaction is?
As Newtons law states “for each action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. The reaction will vary on the amount and speed of water from a branch but the user will feel a force pushing back on them.
When would you use a dividing breaching?
Are used to divide one supply to two sources. They have one male and two female couplings with pressure release lugs.
