In relation to how the fire authority undertake risk assessments, what does HEL stand for?
Humane- morally bound to serve the public
Economic- Reduce damage to equipment and reduce legal claims
Legal- Risk assessment must be done for each activity
What are the three interrelated systems of risk assessment?
Strategic risk assessment- Selected, equipment and trained
Systematic risk assessment- Where all hazards and risks are predicted
Operational risk assessment- continuous assessment and control of risk in rapidly changing circumstances of an incident.
What is the safe person concept/ motto?
The right person, doing the right job with the right tools and at the right time.
Define a hazard?
Some thing that has the potential to cause harm.
What is a risk?
A measure of the likelihood that the harm from a particular hazard will occur, taking into account the possible severity of the harm.
What are the five steps of operational risk assessment?
- Evaluation of the situation, task and persons at risk.
- Select safe system of work.
- Assess the chosen system of work.
- Introduce additional control measures
- Reassess systems of work and additional control measures

The health and safety at work act 1974 places a number of responsibilities on the employer. What are they?
The Act places a number of responsibilities on an employer. Employers are expected to:
• Provide buildings, plant and equipment that are in a good state of repair.
• Provide good working practices that allow safe activity by workers.
• Provide a healthy environment (e.g. heating, lighting, ventilation and noise levels).
• Provide information and training.
What are the employees required to do under policy number 597 LFEPA Health and safety policy?
(AIACROP)
Under the policy all employees are required to:
• Act responsibly and to do everything they can to prevent injury to themselves and other persons.
• Inform their immediate manager of all safety events, damage, or potentially dangerous situations, whether persons are injured or not.
• Assist in the investigation of any safety events as required.
• Correctly use safety equipment, protective devices and PPE.
• Report to their immediate manager any unsafe or defective plant, tools, equipment, PPE, practices, methods or other hazards.
• Observe all rules, appropriate policies, and instructions regarding safety at all times.
• Participate in improving health and safety within the LFEPA by making suggestions on these matters to the manager, supervisor or safety representative.
