A

Landfall - Matthew was the first tropical storm to cause landfall in the USA since Irene in 2011.
Flooding - the hurricane triggered significant flooding especially in Charleston, South Carolina where a seawall was breached and 600,000 individuals lost power. Further damage was evident in North Carolina where 100,000 structures were flooded.

A

1.4 million people were left in need of humanitarian assistance (12 percent of their population).
The hurricane destroyed 90% of houses (and 80% of all structures).
Haiti were still suffering from the destructive 2010 earthquakes where 250,000 residencies were severely damaged.
The hurricane worsened the ongoing cholera outbreak.

A

Overseas aid was vital in providing over a thousand tonnes of food which was key due to the famine-like conditions in the area.
The UN launched an appeal to accumulate aid for the country, asking for $120 million.
