Landfall - Matthew was the first tropical storm to cause landfall in the USA since Irene in 2011.
Flooding - the hurricane triggered significant flooding especially in Charleston, South Carolina where a seawall was breached and 600,000 individuals lost power. Further damage was evident in North Carolina where 100,000 structures were flooded.
Reponses in the US
1,000 members of the national guard were deployed in Georgia.
In North Carolina, nearly 900 people had been rescued by boat crews within 2 days of the disaster.
The U.S. government committed over $100 million in aid to help the response and recovery

Impacts on Haiti
1.4 million people were left in need of humanitarian assistance (12 percent of their population).
The hurricane destroyed 90% of houses (and 80% of all structures).
Haiti were still suffering from the destructive 2010 earthquakes where 250,000 residencies were severely damaged.
The hurricane worsened the ongoing cholera outbreak.
Responses in Haiti
Overseas aid was vital in providing over a thousand tonnes of food which was key due to the famine-like conditions in the area.
The UN launched an appeal to accumulate aid for the country, asking for $120 million.
