humoral responses - b cells Flashcards
b cells
white blood cells involved in specific immune responses
they mature in the bone marrow
memory b cells
dont make antibodies
can divide by mitosis to make plasma cells rapidly if they collide with familiar antigens
antibodies
soluble
flexible
transports in bodily fluids
quaternary structure
can bind to antigens to clump together
agglutination
antibodies bind to antigen forming an antigen-antibody complex
its flexible so it can bend and flex to attach to antigen
makes it easier to locate phagocytes and destroy pathogens
b cell activation
antigens will collide with complementary antibody on the b cell (takes in the antigen by endocytosis and presents it on its cell surface membrane
b cell collides with the helper t cell receptors - this activates the b cell to go through clonal expansion and clonal selection
b cell undergoes mitosis to make large numbers of cells that differentiates into plasma cell or memory b cells
plasma cells make antibodies - b cells divide rapidly into plasma cells when reinfected with the same pathogen to make large numbers of antibodies rapidly
