Humanistic Psychology Flashcards
Humanistic Psychology
Figureheads: Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers
Focusing on the conditions that support healthy personal growth
Rejected dehumanizing / dysfunctional views of ppl; studied healthy ppl instead of mentally unstable ppl
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow believed ppl are motivated to keep moving up a hierarchy of needs
Ascending order:
Deficit Needs, Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Belonging Needs, Esteem Needs, Self-actualization
Self-Actualization
The very top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
A personality includes self-awareness, self-acceptance, open ethics, spontaneity, loving care, focus on grand scale missions
Rogers’ Person-Centered Perspective
Rogers believed that ppl have natural tendencies to move towards self-actualization
Conditions to facilitate this:
- genuineness
- acceptance (aka unconditional positive regard)
- empathy
Ideal Self vs. Actual Self
Self-concept: sense of own nature / identity
Ppl are happiest when their self-concepts match their ideal selves
What do humanists say about evil?
Rogers saw evil as a social phenomenon
Self-acceptance of our immoralities is not the end for ppl; it allows us to move on towards a greater good
How is the humanist perspective too / not self-centered?
Humanism should not encourage selfishness but keep in mind that “positive regard” means “acceptance” not “praise”
