Includes cycles of depression, health problems
Types: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder
Anorexia Nervosa
Compulsion to lose weight coupled w/ certainty about being fat despite being 15+% underweight
Bulimia Nervosa
Compulsion to binge and purge by losing food via laxatives, vomiting, extreme exercise
Binge-Eating Disorder
Compulsion to binge, followed by guilt, depression
What are some associated factors in developing eating disorders?
Having a mother focused on her child’s and her own appearance, weight
Negative self-evaluation in the family
For bulimia: childhood obesity in family
For anorexia: competitive, high-achieving, protective families
