Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Flashcards
history of HIV
hunter’s theory
“The AIDS Highway”
spread of HIV across Africa
which type of HIV is more virulent
HIV-1
how does HIV weaken our immune system?
invades/uses Helper T-cells to produce new viruses
new viruses are released to infect more Helper T-cells
destruction of Helper T-cells interferes w/ activation of B-cells (antibodies)
what is the “window period”
3-12 weeks after exposure to HIV
Sx of stage one: acute infection
develops 4-8 weeks after infected
essentially no Sx
may experience flu-like Sx
immune system is still functioning
Sx of stage two: chronic infection
Asymptomatic
-can have for 10+ years
-virus is still active
Symptomatic
-fatigue
-night sweats
-fever
-diarrhea
-rashes
-swollen lymph nodes
-weight loss
-co infections

WBC: below 200
